Description

Lake Alice is a tough climb. It is the first climb I ever made that made me think I was going to throw up. The climb begins at the Preston-Fall City road with a 5-7% preamble before it starts to get serious. Near the top, when you're already begging for mercy, you'll make a left turn and see the base of the "Thousand Yards from Hell". My inclinometer gives steady readings of 14-16% for a full thousand yards. This crux steep section starts 1.2 miles up from the Preson/Fall City intersection and eases off at 1.5 miles. Use caution on the descent. The acceleration down that steep section is alarming, and those hairpin curves come up really fast at 50mph. The sharp left hander is called "Cornfed Curve" for my buddy Cornfed who exceeded the limits of traction on his tires and had a 50mph intimate encounter with the guardrail. Cornfed and the rail are both doing fine. M
